About

Baseball is an international sport where more than 16 million athletes participate each year. As the competitive population has grown, so too has the number of injuries experienced at the amateur, collegiate and professional levels of the game.

Injuries cause physical and emotional pain. Baseball players who miss competitive time due to injuries may reduce their chances to obtain a college scholarship or to be drafted. Injured players and their families could experience financial hardship in paying medical bills. When a child is injured, parents suffer as they will miss an opportunity to watch their child play. Facility owners will lose out on business, as their injured players will be unable to be coached. Organizations need healthy players in order to compete, as injuries cost teams in lost salaries and also wins. If a team is unsuccessful due to injuries, coaching jobs may be lost.  Bottom line is that we all suffer from injuries in baseball.

Established in 2020, the Baseball Injury Prevention Initiative (Baseball IPI) was created to enhance health and performance in the sport of baseball starting with the BIPI 10, a strength program that is free to all athletes and can be performed anywhere to improve strength, power, endurance, stability and motor control. Research evaluating educational gaps is also a focus of the initiative, as an ongoing study is being performed to evaluate attitudes and behaviors associated with baseball injury prevention strategies by parents and players. If we can understand what is known and not known about player health and performance by parents and players, we can create more effective education to reduce injury risks.
